YOUNG COMPOSERS' CONTEST: 2011 WINNER ANNOUNCED

As part of its commitment to new music and promising young choral artists, Cantate Chamber Singers sponsors a biennial contest for composers age 35 and under in the U.S. and Canada who submit a new work for mixed chorus based on a theme chosen for that cycle by Music Director Gisèle Becker. Winners receive a $1,000 award, and at the director's discretion the winning entry is considered for performance in a Cantate concert.

Josh Hummel The winner of the 2011 Young Composers' Contest is Joshua Rand Hummel of Hartford, Ct. Josh earned his master of music degree in composition from the Hartt School of Music. His winning entry, "Later," based on a poem by the painter Wassily Kandinsky, will be performed at Cantate's GREAT MINDS concert on March 31, 2012. The distinguished judges for Cantate’s eighth Young Composers’ Contest were Judah Adashi, composer and faculty, Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University; Lansing McLoskey, composer and assistant professor of theory and composition, Frost School of Music; and Andrew E. Simpson, composer and professor, Benjamin T. Rome School of Music, Catholic University of America. Mr. Simpson also serves as Cantate’s keyboard artist and is currently the group’s composer-in-residence.

New competition cycles are announced in the fall of "even" years, with works to be submitted the following summer.

The theme and deadlines for the ninth biennial Young Composers' Contest will be announced in fall 2012. Details will be posted on this site as they become available.
